Clever Single Sign-On for K-12 Schools: a Borderset Integration Guide

Marcus Chen · Customer Success Editor, Borderset

Clever SSO is the K-12 standard for app rostering and login. Here is how to wire Clever into Borderset so teachers log in once and rosters stay in sync across every app.

Clever is the K-12 standard most US districts already know: a portal of branded tiles for every learning app, plus a rostering pipeline that ships from the SIS out to every approved vendor. When Clever single sign-on is wired into Borderset, teachers stop juggling passwords across half a dozen tools and the roster file becomes the contract every vendor reads from. That single change tends to retire dozens of small workarounds that have piled up across a district over years.

Why districts pair Clever with their SIS

Most schools already use Clever for math tools, library platforms, and reading programs. Adding the SIS to that portal means it is no longer the outlier app that everybody has to remember a separate password for. A first-grader signs into Clever once and lands in the Borderset student portal alongside the reading app, while a teacher sees the same homeroom list everywhere they look. The result is fewer support tickets in the first week of school and fewer confused families during back-to-school night.

The IT win

Clever becomes the single point of provisioning for the entire app catalogue. New hires inherit the role mapped to their staff group, and end-of-year cleanup is a Clever update rather than a custom deprovisioning script. Combine that with role-based access and you have a clean separation between identity (handled in Clever) and academic permissions (handled inside the SIS), which is the structure auditors actually want to see.

For classrooms, teachers stop rewriting rosters. When a student moves homeroom, the change reaches the Clever-rostered apps overnight, so quiz history, reading levels, and student tracking stay aligned without anyone re-keying a list. If you have not finalized your SIS choice, our 2026 buyer's guide walks through the Clever-compatibility checks you should run during a demo.

How to set up the integration

Plan for about twenty-five minutes of focused work with your Clever district admin. The integration is mostly point-and-click, but the order matters. Doing the steps out of order is the most common reason a teacher logs in and lands on the wrong dashboard.

Request the Borderset app inside Clever

From the Clever district dashboard, search for Borderset and submit the access request. Pre-read the SIS integration playbook so your district admin understands which schools are included and which are deliberately out of scope for the pilot phase.

Share the right roster scopes

Approve student, teacher, and section scopes in Clever. Pair the synced roster with exam management so assessment groups follow class membership automatically and you do not maintain two parallel lists that quietly drift apart between quarters.

Switch Borderset login to Clever SSO

Inside the SIS admin area, set Clever as the login provider for both staff and students. Cross-check the change against your K-12 cybersecurity essentials so older shared-device sign-in patterns are retired cleanly in the same window.

Test the Clever portal launch

Sign in to the Clever portal as a sample teacher and a sample student. Both should land on the right dashboard with no second password prompt and the correct cohort visible. If something looks off, the culprit is almost always a missing school in the share rules rather than a credentials issue, and the fix is a five-minute change in the Clever console rather than a support ticket.

Living with Clever long-term

Once Clever is the front door, review the share rules at the start of each semester. Districts running multiple campuses often graduate to the Borderset enterprise plan, which adds district-level controls on top of the Clever rostering pipeline. For real-world numbers on growth across campuses, see the Level Up case study, which captures how an SSO-first rollout shortens onboarding for each new school.
