Microsoft 365 Education & School Management: an Integration Guide

Priya Mehta · Implementation Lead, Borderset

Microsoft 365 Education + Borderset gives schools SSO, rostered Teams classes, and audit-ready storage. Here is the integration guide for K-12 IT teams.

If your district already runs on Microsoft 365 Education, your IT team is probably tired of maintaining two parallel directories: one in Microsoft Entra for email and Teams, another in the student information system for rosters and grades. A proper Microsoft 365 Education school management integration collapses that gap, so teachers log in once and Teams classes match the SIS section list automatically. Borderset is designed to slot directly into the Microsoft 365 stack you already operate, which means less custom plumbing for IT and a faster path to one identity per person.

What changes after you connect Microsoft 365 to your SIS

Three workflows tighten up almost immediately. Sign-on moves to Microsoft Entra, so account lifecycle in the SIS follows the same hire-and-leave rules your IT team already manages for email and laptops. Class teams in Teams for Education get rostered from SIS sections, so a homeroom change in October does not require a manual member edit by hand. And assignment artifacts in OneDrive remain linked to the right student record for the full retention window, which is the only realistic way to defend a records request months later.

Why IT teams ask for this

The day-to-day wins are obvious: fewer password tickets, fewer orphaned Teams left over from last year, and a single set of MFA controls. The strategic win is audit posture. Microsoft 365 already produces detailed sign-in and storage logs; Borderset adds the academic context layered on top, namely which student, which section, and which grade. Together, those two log streams shorten incident response and simplify security and compliance reviews.

Operations leaders also see cleaner data in student tracking, because attendance signals from Teams class joins can supplement homeroom records on remote-learning days. If you have not picked a school management system yet, our 2026 buyer's guide covers what to demand from any Microsoft 365 integration, including the exact scopes and storage policies to ask about during a vendor demo.

How to set up the integration

Plan for about thirty-five minutes with a Global Admin on the call. The SIS side handles roster shape; your Microsoft 365 tenant handles identity and storage. Doing the four steps in order avoids the most common failure mode, which is a stranded Entra app that has no rostered classes to manage.

Register Borderset in Microsoft Entra

In Entra ID, add the Borderset enterprise application and grant Graph permissions for users, groups, and education-class scopes. Review the SIS integration playbook to know which scopes are required and which can wait until a later phase once the basics are working.

Sync rosters into Teams for Education

Run School Data Sync against the SIS section data and confirm class teams are created with the correct teacher-of-record and students. Pair the sync with the schedule management module so Teams reflect timetable changes mid-term, including substitute coverage windows and exam-week swaps.

Turn on Entra single sign-on

Switch Borderset login to Entra SSO, assign the app to staff and student security groups, and combine it with role-based access so each role sees only its assigned screens. This is also the right moment to retire any legacy local accounts that were created for one-off vendors.

Confirm OneDrive and assignment storage

Open a sample assignment, attach a OneDrive file, and confirm the link is preserved inside the matching student record. Cross-reference the result with the K-12 cybersecurity essentials checklist so external sharing settings are not accidentally widened.

Keeping the integration healthy

Once the connection is live, set a quarterly check on Graph token expirations and SDS run logs. Larger districts that need region-isolated tenants should look at the Borderset enterprise plan, which extends the Microsoft 365 integration with stricter data residency controls and tenant-level audit trails. Treat the integration as a system you tend, not a project you finish, and the Microsoft 365 stack will keep working with the SIS as your district scales.
